LG Display unveils first 48" bendable OLED display - FlatpanelsHD

LG Display has introduced a 48-inch OLED display that is bendable. It also has built-in sound. The display is the first of its kind, the company said.

Ahead of CES 2021, LG Display has announced its 'Bendable Sound OLED display'. It is a bendable version of the 48-inch OLED panel that was introduced last year, optimised for gaming.

- "The 48-inch Bendable CSO display utilizes OLED’s advantages as its paper-thin screen bends and unfolds with a curvature radius of up to 1,000R, meaning that it can be made to bend up to a radius of 1,000mm without affecting the function of the display. It can therefore be turned into a flat screen while watching TV and used as a curved screen while gaming. The curved display offers a uniform viewing distance from the middle of the screen to its edge, maximizing the visual immersion that is popular among gamers," the company said

The OLED display is equipped with the company's CSO (Crystal Sound OLED) technology that can make sound without the use of any speakers. It uses a slim exciter, now with reduced thickness from 9mm to 0.6mm, to vibrate the screen in order to create sound - much like Sony's OLED TVs.

The company added that the panel has fast response time of 0.1 ms, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and VRR support (40-120Hz). It did not specify the resolution but the current 48-inch OLED panel offers 4K resolution so it seem likely to also be the case here.

- "LG Display’s 48-inch Bendable CSO display is optimized for gaming as it maximizes the use of advanced technology that produces another level in terms of providing an immersive experience. In other words, it offers the very best gaming environment to gamers," said Dr. Chang-ho Oh, Head of TV Business Unit, LG Display.

LG Display is LG's division for screen research and manufacturing. It supplies OLED panels to LG Electronics, Sony, Panasonic, Philips/TV Vision, Vizio, and others. The bendable 48-inch OLED panel is officially introduced at CES 2021 but it is unclear if any consumer products will be using it this year. We will learn more in the next two weeks during CES 2021.
